It is believed that the Arabic script came into existence during 4th century AD; however the first document written in Arabic dates from early 6th century. The Arabic script was developed from Nabataean Aramaic script. During 7th century, new letters were added in the Aramaic script to develop Arabic script. Written Arabic has two main forms: (1) Classical Arabic and (2) Modern Standard Arabic. Classical Arabic was used in classical literature including Qu’ran. Modern Standard Arabic is the language of the modern Arabic-speaking population and differs from the classical Arabic in style and vocabulary.

Every Arabic-speaking region in the world has developed its own variety of colloquial Arabic, appearing in poetry, plays, and other texts. There are many varieties of colloquial Arabic including Egyptian, Algerian, Moroccan/Maghrebi, Sudanese, Saidi, North Levantine, Mesopotamian, and Najdi. These varieties sometimes differ so much from each other that they may be considered distinct languages.
