About Moldavian Language

Moldovan also known as Moldavian is one of the two names of the Romanian language in the Republic of Moldova, which is prescribed by the Article 13 of the current constitution of the Republic of Moldova; the other name of the language, recognized by the Declaration of Independence of Moldova and the Constitutional Court, is “Romanian”.


The Consititutional Court at the official level interpreted in 2013 that the Declaration of Independence supersedes the Article 13 of the current constitution, thus giving an official status to the language named as `Romanian.’


Due to the differences in history between the people of Moldovans and Romanians the Soviet policy emphasized distinctions between them. Moldovan was declared as a distinct language which is independent of Romanian by the resolution passed, but the linguists do not agree with that. In 1989 the Latin script was reintroduced to the Moldovan language, but the 1991 Declaration of Independence of Moldova recognized the official language of Republic of Moldova as “Romanian”. The 1994 Constitution, which was passed under a Communist-dominated government, provided an official status only to “Moldovan”.


In the early 2000s further legislation of the status of official language was done. “Moldovan” and “ Romanian” was adopted by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova as a designations for the same language.The name “Romanian” which was used in the Declaration of Independence to identify the official language, prevails over the name “Moldovan”, given in the Article 13 was ruled out by the Constitutional Court of Moldova in the year 2013. The breakaway region of Transnistria continues to recognize “Moldovan” as one of its official languages, along with Russian and Ukrainian.


In general population, as the practices of the most rural residents are slower to change, they have indicated Moldovan as their native language as per the last census, while a majority of people having higher education who are inhabitants of the capital city of Chișinău, according to surveys, name their language as “Romanian”.
